Tesla Faces Sharp Sales Decline in Europe Amid Political Controversy and Market Competition
Tesla's sales in Europe have recently experienced a significant decline, with reports indicating a steep drop in vehicle registrations across key markets. In Germany, new Tesla registrations in January 2025 plummeted by 59.5% compared to the same month the previous year, amounting to just 1,277 units. France recorded an even sharper decline of 63%, while Norway saw a 38% decrease in Tesla sales.
A key factor contributing to this downturn is the political stance and actions of Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Musk has openly expressed support for Germany's far-right political party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), engaging in public discussions with its leaders on social media. His endorsement has triggered significant backlash from consumers across Europe, leading to calls for boycotts. Some Tesla owners have even placed stickers on their vehicles reading, "Bought before Elon went crazy," reflecting their disapproval of Musk's political affiliations.
In Poland, the Minister of Sports voiced strong concerns over Musk’s statements and urged citizens to reconsider purchasing Tesla vehicles. The controversy escalated when Musk, during an AfD rally, remarked that Germany was overly focused on its past guilt—a statement widely interpreted as a reference to Nazi-era crimes, further fueling public outrage.
